Window Coverings: Hot Ways to Keep Things Cool

Table of Contents

When it comes to keeping cool amidst hot summer temperatures, our minds first tend to wander toward lowering our air conditioner thermostat for optimal comfort; but something we sometimes forget is that our window treatments can also help keep things cool when our world heats up.

Some hot window treatments to keep things cool include:

  • Blackout shades, which not only protect our privacy and safety, but block those hot sun rays from seeping into our cool homes.
  • Harsh sun, which can raise the temperature in our homes can also be expertly thwarted by shutters which may be closed just at the top, just on the bottom, or completely – so that you can allow the perfect amount of light into your home. For instance, tap your inner bistro owner and open just the tops of your shutters for a lovely café-style feel during breakfast and lunch. Then, when the sun is high in the sky, maybe just angle the slats for the perfect ambience and, at night, close things up completely for safety and security.
  • You can use blinds and shades in a similar manner, and there is a wide array of choices for either – such as single and double honeycomb shades and even energy saving options including energy efficient triple cell constructed shades. There are Roman shades and designer roller and screen shades too. Blinds come in natural wood, durable faux, neatly stackable vertical blinds and modern aluminum in gorgeous, sleek finishes including matte, metallic and pearlescent.
  • Motorized blinds and shades, which can be operated with a remote control or an easy to operate app, are also an excellent window covering option for keeping out the heat. You can even program them to open automatically in the morning or when you are on your way home; and to close when the sun is the brightest or you’re not home. Motorized blinds and shades work remotely too, so if you forget to close your blinds before you leave for work, no worries!
